Key Measurements to Help You Design Your Dream Bedroom

Emmanuel FonteLearn the dimensions that will help your bed and more fit neatly and comfortably, so you can get a good night’s sleep

We spend more time in bedrooms than in any other room in the house. Even though we are sleeping most of that time, we end and begin our days there. An organized and well-considered space can improve your mood when you need to get to sleep, and get your day off to a good start when you wake.

Planning bedrooms starts with learning standard bed sizes, which one you prefer and which one will work in your plan. Other bedroom furniture comes in all kinds of sizes. Once you determine your room and bed dimensions, you can make good decisions about dressers, chests, benches, chairs, nightstands and so on.

Decorating With Antiques: Set the Stage With Lighting

Emmanuel Fonte AntiquesComplete a vintage scene or create contrast with lamps, sconces and chandeliers that have traveled through time

I majored in theater arts for my first two years of college. It’s a bit in my blood. My dad was in show business — mostly as a director and producer — and when I was a baby, Rock Hudson was my babysitter. Honest! He lived in the apartment next door to us, near Warner Brothers Studio.

Given that background, I’ve always believed interior decoration and design are largely about theater. That is, they’re not just about the nuts and bolts of utilitarian objects under a roof. Rather, they’re about creating a place in which to live out life’s drama — making a beautiful environment that evokes something soul-nourishing. And in decorating, as in theater, lighting is an often-underrated but vitally important element in the creation of that environment.

If you’re like me and you love to include antiques in the “set design” of your home, then antique lighting (which can be a bit of a challenge) is something you should definitely consider.

Something Old, Something New: Stone Barn Gets a New Heart

This conversion in the Irish village of Broughshane started out with something that was already truly an object of beauty: a crumbling old stone barn. With some clever manipulation, they turned the old barn into a light-filled, contemporary living space.

My Amazing Seattle [time-lapsed-video]

Screen Shot 2014-07-02 at 12.22.22 PM“Seattle Dream Pt. II” is our tribute to the city of Seattle and the state of Washington. While most people think of rain and coffee when they hear the name Seattle what they don’t realize is just how amazingly beautiful our city can be. Our film aims to do just that.

With well over 50,000 photos and countless hours of shooting and editing invested into this project we had to narrow the 90+ separate time lapses we took down to just 51 to complete this 5 minute piece. Some of the places we visited while working on this project include places like Kerry Park, Discovery Park, Alki Beach, and even our friends rooftops.

Hang Your American Flag With Etiquette and Style

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 7.51.09 AMShow your patriotic pride with a flag on your home’s exterior for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July or all year round

before my house burned down, I was thinking about flags. It was the end of June, and we were in the midst of painting our home’s exterior. The front and back and one side were finished, and I was closing in on the fourth. It looked so fresh and bright, and I couldn’t wait to fly a flag or two, or 20, for the upcoming Independence Day. I was debating what would look best, but the fire took care of all that.

We moved back into our new house almost a year to the day after the fire, yet again right before the Fourth of July. I was so exhausted that flags were the last thing on my mind, but one more year after that, I couldn’t wait. I’d always loved the look of flags, but now it was a way for me to make a tangible declaration that our family was home and “still there.”
